At Find Data, we’re committed to creating a platform that truly meets the needs of our users. That’s why we will be conducting surveys, wananga and stakeholder research across scales to gather feedback and insights from potential users like you. Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

There is a strong demand for a trusted and comprehensive digital gateway for land and water data, with easy-to-use search capabilities to improve efficiency.

There is strong demand for tools and resources to better understand data to build capability among non data practitioners.

Users are looking for fast, reliable and up-to-date data from a wide range of sources, with the ability to filter and refine search results based on specific criteria without transitioning to 10 different sites of platforms.

There is a need for trusted data that is both accessible and understandable to a wide range of audiences, from researchers and policymakers to kaitiaki, concerned citizens and community groups.

There is a need to help those searching for data to connect them with tools and resources that can customisable and visualise it for them.

What People are Saying about Find Data

The single most important data set that could be included in this portal is access to NIWA's Virtual Climate Station Network (VCSN). The previous clunky free access through Cliflo worked however, since moving to a cost model it is completely inaccessible with the last approx. cost of several thousand dollars for a single site. This is ESSENTIAL information in our changing climate when modelling crop suitability, water use, drainage, N leaching, the list goes on. If you don't do anything else provide access to the VCSN.

It is currently very difficult to obtain high quality climate data that is available for free public use.

Currently data access on freshwater is difficult and data sets are incomplete. There should be a single place where all data is held and reporting is done independently of anyone with a conflict of interest (e.g. councils, MfE).

We desperately need more affordable and accessible weather or climate data sets.

LAWA is difficult to navigate and not complete.

Stats of New Zealand data standards are too high to have all data - it should be opened up to include all relevant statements.

NIWA Virtual Climate Station data should be available for all New Zealanders without a license or fee.

Climate data is a real weakness in New Zealand systems at present compared to overseas.
